  1. I thought this post might be helpful.

We just ended day 1 week 2. The morning consisted of a "tactical march" to a team building exercise. We were split into teams and given timed tasks which required planning and execution. The greatest challenge was that none of us had ever worked together. We all had to rely upon our wits and sense of judgment to get the tasks accomplished. It was easy to get lost in striving for success. However, the whole point of the exercise was team building. I noticed that the problem most people had was not planning and working together but planning and then hesitating before execution of the task. We are often afraid to execute a plan because we are afraid of failure. Thus we hesitate and nothing gets accomplished. It reminds me of Peter's famous declaration that Jesus was the Anointed, the Son of the Living God; and then when Jesus tells everyone what that actually means in action (namely his own execution) Peter balks. Jesus' reaction was strong and swift, "Get behind me Satan, for you are not setting your mind on divine things but human things." (Mk 8) I often wonder why Jesus reacted so strongly. It certainly sounded antithetical to the "Good Guy Jesus" we often assume. But motivating people sometimes takes strong words (like my drill sergeants' words.) Jesus named Peter's fear of action as fear to execute the plan laid out by the One True God and that which is antithetical to God's plan is most definitely Satan's way. I find that there is a similar strain in the church at large. We are so often afraid of acting that we do nothing and the result is...nothing! We must ask ourselves (and the pastor/chaplain must ask him/herself too): of what am I afraid? Then we name it and allow God to guide us through it confident in our faith. God will be there.
